UNDERSTAND YOUR ENTITLEMENT

What does your holiday entitlement mean?

Your annual leave allowance can include both days you choose to book and bank holidays that your employer counts as part of your entitlement.

01

Statutory entitlement

This is the minimum annual paid leave calculated from your normal working pattern. Your employment contract may provide more leave than this minimum.

02

Contractual entitlement

Some employers provide an annual leave allowance above the statutory minimum. If you enter a higher contractual entitlement, the calculator uses that figure for your total allowance.

03

Days available to book

This shows your total annual entitlement after subtracting the bank holidays you told us are included within your allowance.

HOW IT WORKS

How we calculate your holiday entitlement

For a regular working pattern, the calculator uses your normal working week to estimate your annual statutory holiday entitlement.

01

Start with your working week

We use the number of days you normally work each week as the starting point for the calculation.

02

Calculate the statutory allowance

For the regular-hours calculation, your working days per week are multiplied by 5.6, with statutory entitlement capped at 28 days.

03

Account for your contract

If you enter a contractual annual entitlement that is higher than the statutory minimum, we use the higher figure as your total entitlement.

04

Show days available to book

If bank holidays are included within your allowance, we subtract the number you enter to show how many days may remain available for you to book.

CALCULATION ASSUMPTIONS

What this calculator assumes

  • You have a regular working pattern.
  • You work the number of days entered each week.
  • The result represents a full leave year.
  • Any contractual entitlement entered is your full annual allowance.
  • The bank holiday figure represents days your employer counts within that allowance.
  • Irregular-hours and part-year workers are not covered by this version of the calculation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Holiday entitlement FAQs

Common questions about annual leave, part-time working and bank holidays.

How is holiday entitlement calculated?

For the regular working pattern covered by this calculator, statutory annual leave is calculated using 5.6 weeks of holiday. The number of days normally worked each week is multiplied by 5.6, subject to the statutory maximum.

How much holiday do I get if I work 5 days a week?

A regular five-day working week gives 28 days of statutory annual leave under the calculation used here. Your employer may provide more through your employment contract.

How much holiday do part-time workers get?

Regular part-time workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks of statutory holiday based on their working pattern. For example, someone who normally works three days each week would receive 16.8 days for a full leave year.

Are bank holidays included in holiday entitlement?

Bank or public holidays do not have to be provided as additional paid leave. An employer can include them within a worker's statutory annual leave entitlement.

What if my employer gives me more than the statutory minimum?

Your employment contract can provide more annual leave than the statutory minimum. Enter that full contractual annual allowance in the calculator and it will use the higher entitlement.

Does this calculator work for irregular-hours or part-year workers?

Not yet. This calculator currently covers regular working patterns for a full leave year. Irregular-hours and part-year workers can be subject to a different statutory accrual method, so they should not rely on this result.
