UK salary calculator FAQs

Helpful answers about take-home pay, Income Tax and National Insurance.

How much tax will I pay on my salary?

The amount of Income Tax you pay depends on your taxable income, Personal Allowance and the tax bands that apply to you. Enter your annual salary above to see an estimated breakdown for the 2026/27 tax year.

What is take-home pay?

Take-home pay is the amount left from your gross salary after deductions such as Income Tax, National Insurance and any pension or student loan deductions included in the calculation.

How is monthly take-home pay calculated?

This calculator estimates your annual take-home pay and divides it by 12 to show an average monthly figure. Actual monthly payslips can vary because payroll calculations are normally performed for individual pay periods.

Does the calculator include National Insurance?

Yes. The calculator includes an estimated employee National Insurance deduction using the standard rates and thresholds included in our 2026/27 calculation methodology.

Does the calculator include student loan repayments?

Yes. You can select a supported student loan plan in the calculator. The estimated repayment will then be included in your deductions and take-home pay calculation.

Does this salary calculator work for Scotland?

Scottish Income Tax calculations are not currently enabled. The current calculator supports England, Wales and Northern Ireland. We make this limitation clear rather than applying the wrong Income Tax bands.

Why might my actual payslip be different?

Your actual pay can differ because of factors such as your tax code, pension arrangement, benefits, bonuses, salary sacrifice, payroll frequency and other deductions. The figures shown by this calculator should therefore be treated as estimates.
